Adolescent & Teen Orthodontics in Honolulu & ʻAiea, HI
The early teen years are the most common, and often the ideal, time for comprehensive orthodontic treatment. By around ages 11 to 15, most permanent teeth have come in and the jaw is still growing, which lets our board-certified orthodontists move teeth efficiently and shape a healthy bite that lasts. At Dung Orthodontics, every teen starts with a complimentary exam.
Whether your teen needs braces, Invisalign®, or simply a professional opinion, Dr. Dung, Dr. Tom, and Dr. Todoki tailor every plan to the individual, with options that fit a busy school, sports, and social schedule.
Why the Teen Years Are Ideal for Treatment
There is a reason most people picture braces on a teenager. By the early teens, the baby teeth are gone and the permanent teeth are in place, so we can address the full bite at once. Just as importantly, the jaw is still developing, which helps teeth respond well to treatment. Starting at the right time often means a smoother, more predictable result.
Bite and Alignment Problems We Treat in Teens
Comprehensive teen treatment can correct a wide range of issues, including:
- Crowding when there is not enough room for teeth to line up.
- Spacing and gaps between teeth.
- Overbite, where the upper front teeth sit too far over the lower.
- Underbite, where the lower teeth sit in front of the upper.
- Crossbite, where upper and lower teeth do not meet correctly.
- Open bite, where the front teeth do not touch when the back teeth do.
- Protruding front teeth, which are more prone to injury.
Correcting these is about more than looks. A well-aligned bite is easier to clean, less prone to wear, and more comfortable for years to come.
Braces or Invisalign for Teens?
Both work beautifully; the right choice depends on your teen. We will help you weigh the trade-offs:
- Metal and ceramic braces are fixed in place, so there is nothing to lose or forget to wear. They handle even complex cases and are often the most economical option. Today’s braces are smaller and more comfortable than the ones parents remember.
- Invisalign Teen uses clear, removable aligners, so your teen can eat what they like and brush normally. They are nearly invisible and come with features designed for teens. Invisalign works best for responsible teens who will wear their aligners the recommended 20 to 22 hours a day. As a Blue Diamond Plus Provider, our practice has extensive experience guiding teens through aligner treatment. Learn more on our Invisalign page.
What to Expect During Treatment
Most teen treatment takes about 12 to 24 months, with quick check-ups roughly every 6 to 10 weeks. We use iTero® digital scanning instead of goopy impressions, and we work around school and sports as much as possible. Your teen leaves each visit knowing exactly what comes next.
